Holiday Hosting Cleaning Checklist: Before Guests Arrive

October 23, 2026•2 min read

Hosting is stressful enough without scrubbing the guest bathroom at 11 p.m. the night before everyone lands at Sky Harbor. The trick is spreading the cleaning out so the last day is only the quick stuff.

Here’s the plan we’d use for our own houses.

Dining room table and tile floors after a cleaning

Two weeks out: the big stuff

These are the jobs that take time and don’t undo themselves in a few days.

  • Ceiling fans, vents and light fixtures. Guests sitting at your table will look up.
  • Baseboards in the rooms guests will use.
  • Window blinds and sills, especially the ones by the dining table.
  • Inside the oven. You’ll be using it hard. Clean it now, not after the turkey.
  • Clear out the fridge to make room for holiday food. Toss expired stuff and wipe the shelves.
  • Book the help now. If you want a deep cleaning before the holidays, schedules fill up fast in November and December.

One week out: guest spaces

Guest bathroom

This is the room guests will judge the house by.

  • Scrub the toilet, including the base and behind it
  • Descale the faucet and shower glass (Valley hard water shows up fast)
  • Wipe the mirror, counter and cabinet fronts
  • Put out fresh hand towels, a new soap and extra toilet paper where it’s easy to find
  • Empty the trash and check under the sink

Guest room

  • Wash the bedding, even if it’s “clean.” Sheets that sat in a closet pick up a musty smell.
  • Dust the nightstands, dresser and ceiling fan
  • Clear a drawer and a few hangers in the closet
  • Vacuum under the bed

Two to three days out: main living areas

  • Dust every surface in the living room and dining room
  • Vacuum couches and fluff pillows
  • Wipe light switches and door handles
  • Clean glass doors and the patio slider. Afternoon sun makes every smudge visible.
  • Sweep the patio if you’ll be eating outside

The day before

  • Quick wipe of the kitchen counters, sink and stovetop
  • Vacuum and mop the main floors
  • Wipe the guest bath sink and mirror one more time
  • Take out the trash and put in fresh liners
  • Clear the entryway so guests aren’t stepping around shoes and bags

The day of

  • Empty the dishwasher before anyone arrives, so dirty dishes have somewhere to go
  • Have an empty trash can ready in the kitchen
  • Light a candle or run the diffuser, but only after the cleaning’s done

After everyone leaves

Most people forget this part. Once guests leave, the house needs a reset too: guest bedding, the bathroom and a kitchen that’s been through a lot. Some of our clients book a cleaning for the day after the holiday so they can actually rest.

Want to skip the scrubbing?
